Worksheet 2: Neighborhood Walk
Downtown Alta Loma

DO THIS: Stop at the numbered spots marked on the aerial photo. Answer these questions.
Important: Adult supervision is required. Have your parent or teacher take you to the neighborhood study area. Do not go onto private property.

QUESTIONS:

First Spot: Amethyst & La Grande
Look up and down Amethyst Avenue. This area was the downtown for Alta Loma: the center of retail and industry. The vacant land on the east side of Amethyst was the former site of the Alta Loma Packing House, an important industry in the early growth of the area. To the north of the study area is the Alta Loma Elementary School. What land use can you see on the former Alta Loma Packing House site?

Second Spot: Amethyst & Lomita
Look at the historic buildings on both sides of Amethyst. What is the most interesting feature along Amethyst Avenue? What kinds of businesses are in these buildings? Are there other types of businesses that could be successful here, and stimulate and revitalize this downtown area? Hint: visit surrounding cities which have historic downtown areas.

Third Spot: Railroad Xing
About 200 feet south of Lomita Drive, the former Pacific Electric Railway line crosses Amethyst Avenue. The original Alta Loma train station stood just west of Amethyst. The City desires to build trails for bicycling, walking, and horse riding along this abandoned rail corridor. What land uses could benefit from the trail?
