PRESENTATION City planners must present their ideas to the public (the people who live in the neighborhood). They invite the public to hear them talk about their ideas, and to show them maps and pictures. These public meetings are most often conducted by the City Council or Planning Commission. Public speaking is a skill that city planners use to do their job. Most importantly, the city planner listens to what the public has to say about their neighborhood. The city planner is very interested in what the public wants and needs in their neighborhood. Ideally, the city planner hopes to build consensus (agreement) among the people on the vision or plan. Organize your thoughts by writing them down in your journal. The following questions will help you prepare your presentation:
Q1: What is the best part of your plan? Present your land use plan ideas to your student elected "city council". MAKING A DECISION - Have the City Council listen to each student explain their vision. Each councilperson should keep notes about what they like or don't like about each plan. After all plans have been presented, the City Council should discuss the merits of each plan. "What are the positives?" "What are the negatives?" "Do the positives outweigh the negatives?" Vote on the best vision. On the plan with the most votes write: "APPROVED", the date, and have City Council sign their names. As a class, talk about the decision-making process. Was the City Council decision unanimous? Take a vote of the entire class to see if they agree with City Council decision. |
