Introduction

"A neighborhood is a place with nice people. Some neighborhoods are little, but some are big."
Elementary Student
WHAT IS A NEIGHBORHOOD?
We all live in a suburban community called the City of Rancho Cucamonga. The community is made up of smaller neighborhoods, like the one where you live. A neighborhood is an area in which people have relationship and feel a sense of belonging to. Residential neighborhoods are often within walking distance of an elementary school or park which serves as a gathering place. Neighborhoods can also be identified by their boundaries or borders, such as major streets.

"Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir men's blood, and probably themselves will not be realized; make big plans, aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble logical diagram, once recorded, will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever growing insistency. Remember that our sons and grandsons are going to do things that would stagger us. Let your watchword be order and your beacon beauty."
Daniel Burnham (1846-1912)
WHAT IS PLANNING?
The purpose of planning is to create a safe, attractive, healthy, and economically strong community. Planners work to make cities a better place to live and work. The cornerstone of city planning is the master plan or "general plan" which is like a blueprint for building the city. It expresses the efforts of citizens working together to define a community's values.

City planning is all around us. Cities have been planned for as long as they have been built. Where you live, learn, work, and play were all made by city planning choices. The real question we should be asking ourselves is not whether planning is being done, but rather whether we are a part of the planning process. The most effective tool of the planning process is citizen involvement. The Kids Neighborhood Workshop will help you get involved in planning your community.
