Survey: Vehicular Movement

DO THIS: As you walk around the neighborhood notice where the cars go. Answer the questions below. Keep this survey in your journal.

Important: Adult supervision is required. Have your parent or teacher take you to the neighborhood study area. Do not stand or walk in street.

Stand at the intersection of two streets at the edge of the study neighborhood. Count the number of vehicles that drive by for 10 minutes. Multiply by 6.

Stand at all the other intersections at the edge of the study neighborhood. Count the number of vehicles that drive by for 10 minutes. Multiply by 6.

Which street was the most cars drive by?

Note how many pedestrians walked by at these same intersections during the same time period.

Where are sidewalks missing for people to walk on?

At the first intersection you counted cars at, watch the car movement. When the light was 'red', how far back from the intersection were the vehicles stopped? Did the cars block another intersection or major driveway?

Do you see any locations where accidents have happened? Look for broken glass, tire "skid" marks, broken street trees, bent or broken street signs.

Note access points (i.e., driveways where cars enter the street) on map.

Where does the bus stop?
